About Alternative Rock
Alternative rock first appeared in the early 1980s as a successor to punk rock music. Taking on several characteristics of punk rock, alternative rock soon developed into an umbrella form of rock that is less easily described as simply "Rock". The rock genre became so diverse and different as time went on that the meaning was lost, and therefore Alternative Rock came to categorise these new music types shooting off of traditional rock. By the time the 1980s ended, Alternative Rock had planted itself solidly into the music industry, now holding several sub-genres such as Gothic rock, country rock, hip-hop rock and grunge.
My chosen artist, The Hoosiers, specifically focus on the pop rock section of Alternative Rock. Part of their band image is largely inspired by conventions of Alternative and pop rock, such as their smart-casual attires and moral driven lyrics, which you are unlikely to see in grunge or hip-hop. As a band who started their mainstream career in 2007, The Hoosiers have had a great deal of influence on modern Alternative Rock. While not largely contributing themselves, their effect on the industry can be seen in performances and music videos by currently relevant bands such as The Scrip and Maroon 5.
One of the main factors in the popularity of Alternative Rock is it's range and therefore wide target audience. With so much variety to choose from, there is something for everyone. The older generation can find more from their generation, and on the flip side, the younger generation of teenagers can enjoy the new sounds in the ever expanding genre.
