One of the first music videos that come to mind, for me at least, is Bon Jovi's Everyday.
My Favourite Music Videos.
Not only is this one of my favourite Bon Jovi songs, but this video sticks in my mind particularly due to the how well the video goes with the pace of the music. It cuts between scenes and the small amount of dancing makes it very appropriate for the song.
The lyrics are mostly about moving on from your past and acceptance, so the video correspondingly includes a variety of different cultures juxtaposed to each other between cuts.
Bon Jovi - Misunderstood
Another Bon Jovi video, unlike Everyday the song it's self is not a major factor in this being one of my favourites. The lyrics and title are quite appropriate, the music video opens on a girl walking in on her boyfriend in bed with a naked girl, the music then starts as the boy explains himself via subtitles for the rest of the video. This video ranks highly with me because of how convoluted and ridiculous his story becomes over time. Indeed, his bizarre story includes being framed for robbery, run-ins with an oriental mafia and being stripped by attacking dogs. In the end, our protagonist, Jack, is found innocent of cheating, and his relationship with Jill is evidently safe, considering they both reappear in the music video for All About Loving You, where Jack proposes. This holds even more reals for me to like both videos, as they have continued a narrative with characters we are familiar with, which feels very personal and heart warming, especially considering the hard ship they faced in Misunderstood.
Sum 41 - Fake My Own Death
This song was shown to be my a member of my team when we were researching intertextuality. I have no connection to the band or the song, but I love the theme of the music video; dank memes. This video includes references from nyan cat flying around the city to Berney Sanders punching Donald Trump. The sheer amount of memes they integrated, and integrated well, is impressive, too many to count and many were used subtly or in he background, so it would be difficult to provide a count of how many were used throughout the video.
Panic! At the Disco - Emperor's New Clothes
This was another song and video I had not previously known of before this year. This may have even made the top of my list altogether. It has some incredibly impressive and well done visuals, including make-up and editing, as well as imagery. My fascination with folk tales and fantasy concepts may be a major factor in why I like this video so much, as well as enjoying the type of music, but I think the most appealing aspect stems from my media studies.
This is a pinnacle example of everything you can learn in and do with media. Symbolism, imagery, mise-en-scene, editing, even the specifics we've looked at for music videos can be seen in full technicolour all throughout this video. It is without a doubt a huge inspiration to me and my future hopes of what I could produce in a career in media, and I'm sure with aid me in my final product of this course.
